Geodelta supports the Port of Rotterdam with innovative specifications for deformation measurements. We also carry out independent quality control to ensure that the 86 kilometers of quays remain safe and stable for shipping and logistics.
Quay walls: essential but invisible work
At first glance, quay walls appear to be simply walls in the water, but behind these structures lies an enormous responsibility. They must withstand not only water pressure, but also the weight of ships and cargoes. For Europe's largest port, it is essential that the 86 kilometers of quays remain stable. In fact, stable quays are a prerequisite for safe and efficient shipping, the loading and unloading of ships and the maintenance of infrastructure.
Innovative specifications
Geodelta was commissioned by the Port of Rotterdam to draw up new specifications for deformation measurements. What makes this specification unique is the addition of an innovative methodology for computing the deformations in a least squares adjustment, developed by Dr. Hiddo Velsink. This technique provides more insight into the stability of the reference points on which the measurements are based, without disturbing the existing measurement series. It is the first time this new methodology has been applied in practice, marking an important step for the Port of Rotterdam in the optimization of quay wall monitoring. In addition, the specifications define new exchange formats so that the surveying results can be easily deployed by the Port Authority's data scientists.
Certainty about the measurements
In addition to drafting the specifications, Geodelta also performs randomized quality checks on the measurements delivered. During these checks, it is verified that all specification requirements have been correctly met. This independent assessment ensures that the Port Authority can rely on the quality and reliability of the data collected.

Rotterdam's quays are heavily loaded on a daily basis.
Innovation and cooperation
With the new specifications and randomized checks, Geodelta is not only making a direct contribution to the monitoring of quay walls, but also to the further professionalization of deformation measurements within the sector. By working closely with Port of Rotterdam and using advanced techniques, Geodelta is contributing to the stability and safety of the port of Rotterdam.
