How do you make young people discover how beautiful and relevant the geo field is? By introducing them to it. That is why this year we actively participated in GeoWeek, a national initiative that introduces students to geo-information and its applications.
Our colleagues provided interactive guest lessons at both a primary and secondary school in the region. During these lessons, students were challenged to think about their living environment in a playful and substantive way. Using our own web application Omnibase, they got to work on topical questions, such as:
- âšī¸ Will we still have outdoor gym if the levees breach?
- đ Will an additional playground fit in the neighborhood?
- đĸ What does a roller coaster look like in 3D?
In addition, the students learned how a laser scanner works and discovered what you can do with point clouds. As one of the students enthusiastically remarked, "Pretty cool!"

Making geodesy accessible - for young and old alike
What these guest lectures showed above all is that with the right tools you can make even complex geo-information understandable. Omnibase proved not only to be a powerful solution for professionals, but also intuitively usable even by schoolchildren. This once again underlines the power of user-friendly software in the geo-domain: if children can work with it, the threshold for professionals is even lower.
Get involved and share your craftsmanship
GeoWeek is not only educational for students. We too learned a lot - about how young people think and what they consider important. Therefore, we call on other organizations in the geo-sector: participate next year as well. Because the more peers share their knowledge, the stronger we make our field together.
Curious about what Omnibase can do for your organization? Or would you like to discuss a possible contribution to the next GeoWeek?
